The king

One step at a time, never into danger

Try this lesson in Chess40

Step 1

The king moves one square in any direction. It is the most important piece: losing the king means losing the game.

White: King e4. Marked: d3, d4, d5, e3, e5, f3, f4, f5.a8b7c6d5e4f3g2h1

Step 2

The king may never step onto a square the enemy attacks. Here the black rook controls the fifth rank, so d5, e5 and f5 are forbidden.

White: King e4. Black: Rook a5. Marked: d4, f4, d3, e3, f3.a8b7c6d5e4f3g2h1

Step 3

Walk the king to the stars.

White: King e1. Stars: e3, f5.a8b7c6d5e4f3g2h1

Target: 4 moves.

Step 4
