Deflection

Pull a defender away from its duty

Step 1

Deflection forces a defender to leave its post. Here the black queen guards the back rank against Re8, and protects the rook on c7 at the same time: too many jobs for one piece.

White: King g1, Rook e1, Bishop f4, Pawn f2, Pawn g2, Pawn h2. Black: King g8, Queen d8, Rook c7, Pawn f7, Pawn g7, Pawn h7.a8b7c6d5e4f3g2h1

Step 2

White to play: take the rook. If the queen takes back, it leaves the back rank, and the rook mates.

White: King g1, Rook e1, Bishop f4, Pawn f2, Pawn g2, Pawn h2. Black: King g8, Queen d8, Rook c7, Pawn f7, Pawn g7, Pawn h7.a8b7c6d5e4f3g2h1

White to move.
